Museum of Science Star Lab!

The Museum of Science visited Fuller Meadow and set up a Star Lab in our very own gym!

We all used binoculars and acted like astronomers as we searched the gym for a planet. We made observations and recorded our data.

When we were done, we headed into the Star Lab! We searched the night sky for different stars, the moon, and for different constellations.

We learned about the different star colors and how they tell us how hot a star can be.

The finale of the show included a constellation show! We had a blast! Thank you to all who made this possible!

We've Been Writing!

We are officially published authors here in RM. 122!

During the week of Halloween we wrote, edited, published, AND illustrated our very own Halloween themed stories!
The students created their our own cover pages and I laminated them to give them a "fancy" look!

My students started with a graphic organizer to help them brainstorm their characters, the setting, and the problem and the solution.

We then wrote our rough draft and edited with a friend to check for spelling, punctuation, and how to add more detail!

Then, we were ready to publish! We created our cover photos, published our writing, and added illustrations for each page. We even shared our books to others inside the spider web!

The kids loved their final pieces! Keep your eyes peeled for our books coming to a shelf near you!

Scholastic News!

During Science and Social Studies, we have been reading Scholastic News articles about different  topics including current events in the news, national holidays, and famous authors! But this week, we introduced the Scholastic News app, which allows the students to explore the articles independently, have the newspaper read to them, as well as answer comprehension checks at the end!

The students loved having their own access to these articles! We are so lucky to have our own classroom iPads that allow us to do this :)

Check out some pictures of the students learning about the Flying Fox bat, which they told me is the biggest bat in the world, growing up to six feet!

If you get the chance, ask your student something they have learned from a Scholastic News article!

Walk to School!

After coming to school on Friday we headed back outside and did our "walk to school"! As a school, we walked around the neighborhood behind Fuller Meadow. We had a beautiful morning and everyone enjoyed being outside!

Mr. Sam was watching the traffic to keep us safe!

Talk about some happy kids! :)

This was the perfect way to start our Friday! Active bodies lead to active minds!

Johnny the K!

Johnny the K came to Fuller Meadow on Friday!
Johnny the K is a musician who wears many hats (metaphorically and literally 😁) and spreads his positive message of being a kid with character through music! He speaks about kindness, anti-bullying, having respect for others, having courage, and being unique. He was a great way to start off our rainy Friday morning!

The kids loved all of his songs and a few of our students were called up as volunteers!

Addie dancing with students from all three grades!
Akhil and Ben pushing the world around!

I may have stayed a little longer and asked for a picture! The kids didn't seem to mind!

Feel free to check out Johnny the K for yourself!

Dot Day!

Happy Dot Day from Room 122!

On Friday, we celebrated International Dot Day at Fuller Meadow which is inspired by the book The Dot written by Peter H. Reynolds. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to "make her mark". What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.
We started the day by reading The Dot and brainstormed all the ways we are individually unique! The students had great answers! Some spoke about their families, their karate abilities, or some spoke about their specific personalities and how that made them special! I loved all the positivity and creativity in their answers! Sometimes it's fun to brag! ;)

We then made our own mark in the classroom by painting our own dots on paper plates! We rolled up our sleeves and each plate ended up looking a bit different then the one next to it!

Seesaw was our next stop for Dot Day, where we created our own dots in the drawing pad and uploaded them to our portfolio! We, of course, didn't forget to sign our names! I hope you had a chance to check them out!

Lastly, we met up with the entire First Grade Class and made our mark outside Fuller Meadow! When we were done, we made a giant "first grade dot" around all of our chalk dots!

I loved celebrating the uniqueness of our class and promoting confidence and courage in everything we do :) The students had a blast putting their special mark on each project that we did and it was so neat to see how creative they could all be!

First Week Recap!

I am SO excited to be back at Fuller Meadow for a brand new school year! We've had so much fun getting to know one another these past couple days so I wanted to share with you all some of the neat things we have been up to!

We named our class mascot! He was donated to me by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City! The class voted and we introduced Mr. Spike Bigback to Room 122!

We met our neighbors and went over to Mrs. Sharffenberg's class and had a dance party! They then traveled over to our classroom for a GoNoodle!

We received our book boxes and found cozy spots around the room to read! Some students even found friends to read with! No worries here though, that dinosaur is a vegetarian!! :)

Students learned how to use Epic! during read to self!

Last but not least, we met up with Mrs. Baker and she showed us how to use Seesaw! If you haven't connected with your student yet on the app or need help figuring it out, let me know! The students have loved seeing you all like and comment on their posts! They are becoming so independent with adding their work to their portfolio!

I am super proud of the dinosaurs in Room 122!

On the first day we will have a very serious job of naming our class mascot!
